Ignite Karate hosts two Karate Performance Tournaments per year- one in the fall/winter and one in the late spring/early summer. The event is free and fully virtual, and is non-competitive.
During the event, students are showcased one at a time to perform a practiced form or basics sequence. Students can perform their basic karate moves (called out by Sensei Jenny), or they can perform a form they know (Form Perseverence, Form Foundation, or Form Evolution).
Karate Basics students do not yet practice form, so we will be practicing the basic karate moves for the performance that Sensei Jenny will call out. Intermediate and Advanced students may perform any of the forms that they have previously learned, although we will be working specifically on Form Evolution in class this month.
Students watch their classmates, support and clap for them, and at the end of the tournament all students earn a medal or trophy (medals in the winter tournament, and trophies in the summer tournament). Families must order the award in advance (see below).
Our Karate Performance Tournaments are for all students, of all levels!
Performance events are a wonderful way for students to build self-confidence. By committing to the event ahead of time, and practicing outside of class, students learn how to set goals and work towards achieving them. Importantly, the emphasis on our events is not on "winning" or being better than our classmates. Because they are performance in nature, our events give students a safe space to rise to a challenge, and succeed by doing their individual best. This is essential for developing self-esteem and sense of pride in one's hobbies and interests.
Families can order their child's own award at the link below. In the Summer Tournament, we award small trophies, and in the Fall/Winter Tournament, we award medals. Our aim is to keep the award economical and accessible to all families, so we provide the recommendation below for a trophy.
You may customize the color- there are quite a few choices, and also the figure (we suggest a karate or taekwondo figure, but there are various poses and some with long hair and some with short hair). There are 10", 11", and 12" trophies available- the price difference between them is a dollar or less; families should choose a size they would like.
There is also engraving available. Three lines are available and we suggest the following:
STUDENT NAME
IGNITE KARATE
JUNE 2025
Yes! Please see the videos below!
Both! We will dedicate time in class to specifically practice for the performance. However, much of the value of participating in a tournament really stems from the efforts a student puts in on their own time to prepare for the event. We recommend students practice in front of their parents once or twice a week to prepare for the tournament and give as much value as possible to the earning of the award.
We will be practicing this form in classes this month.
Students may perform this if they are in the karate basics class. Intermediate basics will be posted soon.
