Capoeira (capu-EH-ra) is a Brazilian martial art that integrates music, language, culture, acrobatics and dance.  It originated in Brazil during the 16th century, developed by enslaved people from Africa who were brought to the country. It emerged as a form of self-defense disguised as a dance to evade authorities. Capoeira continued to evolve and gain recognition throughout the 20th century, eventually becoming a symbol of Brazilian cultural identity and a powerful tool for resistance against oppression. 

We offer classes for the following age groups: kids ages 4-10, teens ages 11-17, adults, and families (combined ages within the same household training together).

Ignite Capoeira teaches a holistic practice that nurtures the mind, body, and spirit, promoting physical fitness, mental agility, and a sense of identity and connection. We integrate movement, music, culture, and community, which fosters self-expression and confidence.  This secure sense of self is the bedrock for learning life skills,  developing resiliency, and for nurturing positive mental health- all essential in the face of our changing world.  Importantly, we believe we can accomplish building this foundation through play, connection, and fun!  

Classes are led by Jenny Johnson-Blanchard, or "Instrutora Vespa", and James Lynch, or "Instrutor Coruja". Jenny and James have over 40 years combined experience in martial arts, and have taught children and adults of all ages in both in-person and virtual formats.  Jenny has been practicing capoeira for over 12 years, and holds the rank of "Instrutora" ("Instructor"). She also holds the rank of 4th degree black belt in karate.  James has been practicing capoeira for nearly 20 years, and holds the rank of "Instrutor" ("Instructor").  Additionally, he holds the rank of 4th degree black belt in taekwondo.
